Gottman Method
Relationship Counselling
Strengthening Connection, Communication and Understanding
Relationships can become caught in patterns that leave both partners feeling unheard, disconnected or unsure how to move forward. Gottman Method Couples Therapy can help you understand these patterns and develop practical ways to communicate, manage conflict and strengthen your connection.
What Is Gottman Method Couples Therapy?
The Gottman Method is a research-informed approach to couples therapy developed by Drs. John and Julie Gottman.
The approach is based on decades of research into what helps relationships remain healthy and what can contribute to emotional distance, recurring conflict and disconnection.
Gottman Method Couples Therapy focuses on three central areas: strengthening friendship, managing conflict and creating shared meaning. It can help partners understand one another more clearly, express their needs more effectively and respond differently when difficult patterns arise.
The goal is not to eliminate every disagreement. Conflict is a natural part of relationships. Instead, couples learn how to approach differences with greater understanding, communicate without causing further harm and repair the relationship when difficult interactions occur.
What Can the Gottman Method Help With?
Gottman-informed couples therapy may be helpful for concerns such as:
Frequent arguments or recurring conflict
Communication difficulties
Emotional distance or disconnection
Feeling misunderstood or unheard
Difficulty repairing after disagreements
Changes in trust
Intimacy and affection concerns
Parenting disagreements
Financial or household stress
Major life transitions
Differences in values, priorities or future goals
Strengthening an already healthy relationship
You do not need to be married or experiencing a relationship crisis to benefit from couples counselling.
What Happens in Gottman-Informed Couples Therapy?
Therapy is collaborative and tailored to the needs, experiences and goals of your relationship. Together, we may explore:
The strengths that already exist in your relationship
Patterns that contribute to conflict or disconnection
How each partner experiences and responds to stress
Communication habits that make understanding more difficult
The feelings and needs underneath recurring disagreements
Ways to strengthen friendship, fondness and appreciation
Strategies for managing conflict and repairing after difficult moments
Shared values, hopes and goals for the relationship
Sessions may include guided conversations, communication exercises and practical strategies that you can use outside of therapy.
You may also be invited to practise new ways of responding between sessions. This creates opportunities to apply what you are learning in everyday situations and notice where change is beginning to occur.
What Happens in Gottman-Informed Couples Therapy?
Couples therapy is not about deciding who is right or taking sides.
I integrate Gottman Method principles within a relational, supportive and trauma-informed approach. We will work together to understand the cycle that has developed between you and the experiences, emotions and protective responses that may be contributing to it.
Both partners will have opportunities to feel heard and understood. The focus is on creating greater safety, strengthening connection and helping you respond to one another with more clarity, compassion and intention.
The goal is not to create a perfect relationship. It is to help you build a relationship in which challenges can be approached with greater understanding, respect and confidence.
